Sono stata in Vietnam nel 1999 e sicuramente il paese che io ho visto non è quello odierno! La baia di Halong è senz'altro una delle maggiori attrattive in Vietnam. Patrimonio della Umanità, questa meraviglia naturale è caratterizzata da quasi 2000 isole calcaree che emergono dalle acque blu del Golfo del Tonchino.  Questa non è la sola attrattiva: ad esempio il centro storico di Hoi An, anche essa patrimonio della Umanità, è una città da non perdere per le influenze delle diverse culture. Il centro è  percorso da stradine strette e tortuose con ai lati antiche case di mercanti, e con il famoso Ponte Coperto Giapponese del XVI secolo, che collega le comunità giapponese e cinese attraverso il torrente. Si incontra un popolo sorridente e gentile, si può però anche  rivivere  il doloroso passato della guerra visitando i vari musei. Mi ha particolarmente affascinato lo spettacolo di marionette sull’acqua nel lago Hoam Kien nel cuore di Hanoi, una tradizione amata sia dai turisti che dai vietnamiti stessi. Non dimentichiamo le famose risaie, un esempio di spettacolare architetture naturale, e non dimentichiamo neanche il cibo  delizioso, specialmente lo "street food" nelle città.

I was in Vietnam in 1999 and the country I saw is certainly not the one of today! Halong Bay is undoubtedly one of the major attractions in Vietnam. A World Heritage Site, this natural wonder is characterized by almost 2000 limestone islands that emerge from the blue waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. This is not the only attraction: for example the historic center of Hoi An, also a World Heritage Site, is a city not to be missed due to the influences of different cultures. The center is crossed by narrow, winding streets lined with ancient merchants' houses, and with the famous 16th century Japanese Covered Bridge, which connects the Japanese and Chinese communities across the stream. You meet a smiling and kind people, but you can also relive the painful past of the war by visiting the various museums. I was particularly fascinated by the water puppet show in Hoam Kien Lake in the heart of Hanoi, a tradition loved by both tourists and the Vietnamese themselves. Let's not forget the famous rice fields, an example of spectacular natural architecture, and let's not forget the delicious food either, especially the street food in the cities.
